Photopea: Your Powerful Free Online Photo Editor

by Behrad

Photopea.com is very handy online photo editor which you can use without the need to install a photo editing software.

On the introduction page, the developer mentioned why he developed Photopea.

Because photo editors are native apps, it is hard to find any good editor for some minority operating systems. Some users may even buy some specific operating system just to be able to run the photo editor. Photo Pea should remove all these problems.

It also allows you to work with pre-defined sizes for Instagram, Facebook Cover or YouTube Cover image as well as templates to get you started. All your basic editing tool such as cropping, resizing, adjusting colors and other advanced editing tools such as Layers, Masks and filter are also available.

The free online photo editor gives you a user-friendly interface that allows you to quickly navigate through the difference tools & features. It looks very much like Photoshop and also allows you to import various file formats such as .psd or even .xcf (GIMP’s file extension).

As mentioned the interface is very easy to understand and navigate through, you can check the “learn” page so you can learn on how to use the editor. There are also a lot of tutorials which you can follow as well.

Photopea claims that it runs locally and should even run without any internet connection. I did try this where I first downloaded a template, disconnected from internet and edited the template by adjust it text and colors. Adding a custom or shape or changing the font however was not possible since it required an internet connection but that makes senses.

Photopea runs completely in your device, just like Sketch or Photoshop do. It does not upload any of your files to the internet. You can load Photopea.com, disconnect from the internet and keep using it completely offline. None of your files ever leaves your computer.

Photopea is not fully open-source, the GitHub repository serves as a place for bug reports, feature requests, and general discussion. So feel free to submit a feature if you miss it.

Although I would prefer to go for a native app such as GIMP or even better Photoshop, if it wasn’t that expensive, I do see a added value for a free online photo editor. It gives me the “Photoshop” vibes a lot and it’s very easy to navigate through.

So, whether you’re looking to edit photos. create something cool from scratch, or simply enhance existing images, Photopea got you covered and offers you the tools and options to do so! So give it a try and let me know what you think of it!
